Rievaulx Abbey 2013
Rievaulx Abbey was the first large Cistercian abbey in England and was founded in 1132 by twelve monks as a missionary centre for northern England and Scotland. In its heyday, the abbey was home to about 650 monks. However, in 1381 this number had dwindled and there were only 17 monks and the abbot left. In 1538 Rievaulx Abbey was dissolved by King Henry VIII.
The ruins of the abbey are just breathtaking and I could have spent the entire day there.
